Spending by Merchant
Overview
The Spending by Merchant insight is a schedule-triggered insight that provides the top merchants for a specific entity that the user spent on for the user-defined duration. Only expense merchants are considered for this insight. The insight will be generated only if the user spends on a merchant in the configured duration.

Use Cases
- Customer:
- Up-Sell / Cross-Sell opportunities - Offer products that could potentially save money for users. E.g. co-branded credit cards or direct merchant offers.
- User:
- Financial wellness - Keep track of spending.
Suggested Action
Suggest users to create a VIEW based on the top merchants, set a budget, and track spending.
Duplicate Insight Checks
To prevent the same insight from generating repeatedly, the insight is generated only once per scheduled frequency for each entity ID.
The following are the applicable frequencies for this insight:

Insight Dynamic Trigger (On-Demand Evaluation)
The dynamic trigger is applicable to the insight. Depending on the configuration, this insight can be invoked dynamically when:
- A new View is created
OR - A View ID is patched using the user subscription API
The insight is generated dynamically using any of the above two methods only if the view is eligible and the other insight generation checks are passed.
Note: By default, the configuration is set to dynamically trigger insight evaluation, everytime a new entityId (view ID) is added using the PATCH userSubscription API. During onboarding, this preference can be changed.

Peer Benchmarking Data
This insight provides peer benchmarking (PB) data only to the Accounts entity. Based on the segmentation parameter provided by the user, PB data is returned for merchants at the peer, state, and national benchmark levels.
The default frequency and duration will be based on whether the customer has enabled or disabled the peer benchmarking feature during onboarding:
- PB enabled: The default frequency will be
MID_MONTHLYand default duration will beLAST_THREE_MONTHS. - PB disabled: The default frequency will be
MONTHLYand default duration will beTHREE_MONTHS.
Thresholds
Threshold lets the customer or the user decide how many merchants have to be returned by default in the insight. If the TOP value is 5, the top 5 merchant based on the highest spending is returned in the insight.
- Threshold Name: TOP
- Data Type: NUMBER
- Range Allowed: 1 < = N <= 100
- Default: 5
Note: Depending on the customer segment and account, threshold might need to be different for different users. If the default value is insufficient, the users can set a threshold they are comfortable tracking.
GET Customer Subscription
The GET customer subscription API provides all the information about the defaults set for the insights that are subscribed by the customer. If the customer has opted for the PB feature during onboarding, the isBenchmarkEnabled field will be by default true in the API response.
The default frequency and duration will be based on whether the customer has enabled or disabled the peer benchmarking feature during onboarding:

PATCH Customer Subscription
Using the PATCH API for customer subscription, customers can change the defaults for each insight. Alternatively, customers can use the insights configuration tool to achieve the same result.
If the customer has not opted for the PB feature during onboarding, the isBenchmarkEnabled field will be by default false and cannot be modified. The PB feature can be opted post onboarding too.
Warning! Changing any defaults can potentially impact all users who have subscribed to this insight. If the user has overridden the customer threshold, then the user preference will be applied. For all other users, the new defaults will apply.

Note: The duration specifies the maximum date range. However, if the account or view contains data for less than this duration, only the smaller date range will be considered. For example, duration is specified as ONE_YEAR. However, the view rule starts from 3 months ago. In this case, data will be returned starting from 3 months, until the current date.

PATCH User Subscription
Using the PATCH user subscription API for user subscription, users can change the defaults for each insight. If the user wants the insight to be evaluated for a new account or a new view , then add that account or view using the PATCH user subscription API. The customer default threshold values will apply if the user has not set any values.

GET Insight Feeds
The GET insights feed API retrieves all or a subset of the valid insight notifications generated for a particular user. However, using the insightName filter, you can specifically request for the Spending by Merchant insight only. The insight is generated only if basicTrend.debitTotal.amount is greater than 0.
